Getting regular oil changes is one of the most important aspects of Mazda maintenance. Changing your Mazda oil on the recommended maintenance timeline improves performance, improves vehicle longevity, and keeps your car running the way that it should.

Here at Mazda of New Bern, our mechanics perform oil changes to keep your car running smooth. If you're noticing any of these five signs, it's time to schedule an appointment with our Mazda service experts.

1. Check Engine Light Illuminated

Depending on your make and model, either the check engine or the oil change light will illuminate when it's time for an oil change. This is your car's warning that things have gotten so bad that the engine is at risk of damage.

2. Engine Noise and Knocking

Oil provides a protective layer between different parts of the engine, avoiding the metal-on-metal banging. If your oil isn't properly lubricating, the engine will start making noises.

3. Oil Smell Inside Car

The smell of oil inside your car is often an indication of an oil leak. It could also mean that your engine is overheating. Either way, you'll want to schedule service immediately.

4. Dark, Dirty Oil

Clean oil is amber colored and slightly translucent. As it gets used, it becomes filled with particles that turn it darker. Because it will not be obvious when this first happens, you must check the engine oil at least once per month.

5. Exhaust Smoke

While some translucent vapor will always come out of the tailpipe, if it turns to smoke, it's time for a checkup. It could be due to an oil leak or other engine problems.
